I love essential oils. I have used them consistently for over ten years, and people often ask which ones I use and how to get started using the oils themselves. A broad array of information about essential oils is available, and knowing where to start can be overwhelming. However, here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Three ways to use essential oils

The three primary methods for using essential oils include aromatic, topical, and internal.

When you choose oils, be sure the product you select is pure, so do your research and find a company you can trust. I’ve tried a variety of brands over time, and I choose to use doTERRA® products. I feel confident they are rigorously tested and of high quality.

The three primary methods for using essential oils include aromatic, topical, and internal.

Aromatic

Aromatic refers to the aroma of the oil. To use oils in this way, open the bottle and breathe in the scent or use them in a diffuser. You might put a couple of drops on the palm of your hands then cup your hands over your nose and mouth to inhale. Some of my favorites to diffuse are the blends ON GUARD® and BREATHE®. I also enjoy the calming effect of Lavender, and the purifying and uplifting citrus oils, like Lemon, Wild Orange, and Lime.

Topical

Topical refers to the use of the oil on the surface of your skin. Apply the oils directly to the targeted area or apply them to the bottom of the feet; this is especially important for young children. I use Frankincense and Geranium on my face, and Myrrh over my thyroid, the blend DEEP BLUE® feels great on tired or sore muscles. I enjoy massaging my dad’s feet with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, and add soothing oils, such as DEEP BLUE® or Lavender, as I rub. I also like to apply BREATHE® to my chest.

Internal

Internal refers to the use of the oil within your body. Put a drop on your tongue, in your drinking water, or put drops in capsules to be swallowed. Do your research to ensure the oil is appropriate for ingesting. When I first started using doTERRA, I had just completed chemotherapy, and I had experienced recurrent bronchial infections. I started putting a drop or two of ON GUARD, which supports the immune system, in my water daily with a couple of drops of Wild Orange or Lemon, and my bronchial issues cleared up and have not returned. Finishing chemo may have also helped my immune system, but I still use ON GUARD daily.

Commonly used oils

Lavender is the most widely-used essential oil in the world.

Lavender is the most widely-used oil in the world because of its calming and relaxing qualities. Centuries ago, Romans and Egyptians used Lavender for cooking, relaxation, bathing, and as a perfume. Because of Lavender’s versatility, it is considered a staple in any essential oil collection. If I could have one oil, it would be Lavender. If you’re new to using essential oils, Lavender is a great first choice.

Peppermint is a versatile essential oil with many uses.

Peppermint is another excellent oil to have on hand. A drop on your tongue freshens your breath. If you are hot or feverish, a drop on the back of your neck is cooling you can even add a few drops to a wet, cool washcloth and apply the cloth to the back of the neck. It may also help with nausea. Invigorate your lungs by breathing in Peppermint.

Clove oil promotes healthy teeth and gums.

Clove brings fond memories. Grandmother used to keep a small container of cloves in her purse. When she needed fresh breath, she would chew a clove. I loved the smell, but chewing on the woody cloves did not appeal to me. Clove essential oil promotes healthy teeth and gums, and it is a powerful antioxidant. I try to brush my teeth with a drop of Clove on the brush once a day. Good oral health is important, especially if you are having chemotherapy. Clove can help.

Specialty essential oil blends serve many purposes.

Specialty blends also serve an excellent purpose. I pay attention to what products, like soap and lotions, I put on my body. doTERRA® has a dedicated team of committed experts who search for, distill, then distribute the highest quality and purest essential oils.

I enjoy many of the doTERRA® products for my personal care needs.

Some of the company’s wonderful blends that I use are self-explanatory, like SERENITY®, CHEER®, CONSOLE®, PEACE®, AND MOTIVATE®. Another oil blend is Root to Tip Serum. I applied this on my scalp as my hair was growing back, following chemotherapy. It smells lovely, and it felt good on my head.
